Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 1 ½ pounds ground beef (80/20)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (divided)
- 4 hamburger buns
- 4 slices cheddar or American cheese
Toppings
- 1 small onion (thinly sliced)
- Pickles
- Lettuce
- Tomato slices
- Mayonnaise (optional)
- Mustard (optional)
Instructions
- Shape and Season Patties: Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and gently shape into patties, being careful not to overwork the meat. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
- Cook Patties: In a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the patties and cook for 3–4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired doneness.
- Melt Cheese: During the last minute of cooking, top each patty with a slice of cheese and cover the skillet to allow the cheese to melt thoroughly.
- Toast Buns: While the burgers cook, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter in a separate pan or brush it directly onto the cut sides of the buns. Toast the buns in a skillet or under the broiler until golden brown.
- Assemble Burger: Place each cheesy patty on the bottom bun, then top with sautéed onions (if using), pickles, lettuce, tomato, and any desired condiments like mayonnaise or mustard. Cover with the top bun and serve hot.
Notes
- For an extra-rich version, place a thin pat of cold butter on top of each burger patty just before serving.
- The key to a juicy butter burger is using high-fat ground beef and generously buttering the buns.
