Description

This Taco Pie is a delicious and easy-to-make Mexican-inspired dish featuring seasoned ground beef in a flaky pie crust, topped with melted cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses, creamy sour cream, and crunchy crushed tortilla chips. Perfect as a hearty main course, it can be customized with fresh toppings like lettuce, tomatoes, olives, and green onions for added texture and flavor.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 packet taco seasoning mix (or 2 tablespoons homemade taco seasoning)
  • ¾ cup water

Crust & Toppings

  • 1 (9-inch) refrigerated pie crust or homemade pie crust
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup crushed tortilla chips or corn chips

Optional Fresh Toppings

  • Chopped lettuce
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Sliced black olives
  • Chopped green onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the taco pie.
  2. Cook beef and onion: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef with the chopped onion until the beef is fully browned and the onion softens, about 6 to 8 minutes. Drain off any excess fat.
  3. Add seasoning: Stir in the taco seasoning mix and water, combining well. Let the mixture simmer for 5 minutes until it thickens slightly.
  4. Prepare pie crust: Press the pie crust evenly into a 9-inch pie dish and prick the bottom with a fork to prevent puffing.
  5. Assemble pie: Spoon the seasoned beef mixture evenly into the pie crust. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses evenly over the beef layer.
  6. Add sour cream: Spread the sour cream evenly over the cheese layer to create a creamy topping.
  7. Top with chips: Sprinkle crushed tortilla or corn chips evenly on top of the sour cream layer for a crunchy finish.
  8. Bake: Place the assembled pie into the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly around the edges.
  9. Rest: Remove the pie from the oven and let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing. This allows it to set for easier serving.
  10. Add fresh toppings: Before serving, add optional toppings like chopped lettuce, diced tomatoes, sliced black olives, or chopped green onions for extra color and flavor.

Notes

  • Substitute ground beef with ground turkey or plant-based meat for a lighter or vegetarian-friendly version.
  • Add a layer of refried beans under the meat filling for additional flavor and texture.
