Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 packet taco seasoning mix (or 2 tablespoons homemade taco seasoning)
- ¾ cup water
Crust & Toppings
- 1 (9-inch) refrigerated pie crust or homemade pie crust
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 cup crushed tortilla chips or corn chips
Optional Fresh Toppings
- Chopped lettuce
- Diced tomatoes
- Sliced black olives
- Chopped green onions
Instructions
- Preheat oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the taco pie.
- Cook beef and onion: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef with the chopped onion until the beef is fully browned and the onion softens, about 6 to 8 minutes. Drain off any excess fat.
- Add seasoning: Stir in the taco seasoning mix and water, combining well. Let the mixture simmer for 5 minutes until it thickens slightly.
- Prepare pie crust: Press the pie crust evenly into a 9-inch pie dish and prick the bottom with a fork to prevent puffing.
- Assemble pie: Spoon the seasoned beef mixture evenly into the pie crust. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses evenly over the beef layer.
- Add sour cream: Spread the sour cream evenly over the cheese layer to create a creamy topping.
- Top with chips: Sprinkle crushed tortilla or corn chips evenly on top of the sour cream layer for a crunchy finish.
- Bake: Place the assembled pie into the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly around the edges.
- Rest: Remove the pie from the oven and let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing. This allows it to set for easier serving.
- Add fresh toppings: Before serving, add optional toppings like chopped lettuce, diced tomatoes, sliced black olives, or chopped green onions for extra color and flavor.
Notes
- Substitute ground beef with ground turkey or plant-based meat for a lighter or vegetarian-friendly version.
- Add a layer of refried beans under the meat filling for additional flavor and texture.
