Ingredients
Scale
For the Cake:
- 1 box chocolate cake mix (approx. 432g / 15.25 oz)
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 3 large eggs
- 1/2 cup water
For the Frosting:
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon milk (as needed)
- Gel food coloring (orange, green, purple, or black)
For Decoration:
- Halloween sprinkles
- Candy eyes
- Colored sugar or edible glitter
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
- Make the Batter: In a mixing bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, eggs, vegetable oil, and water. Stir until the batter is smooth and thick, ensuring all ingredients are well incorporated.
- Bake the Cake Rounds: Drop spoonfuls or scoops of batter onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 8–10 minutes, or until the tops spring back when lightly touched.
- Cool the Cakes: Remove the baked rounds from the oven and transfer them to a wire rack. Allow them to cool completely to room temperature before frosting to prevent melting.
- Prepare the Frosting: In a separate bowl, beat together the softened unsalted butter and vegetable shortening until light and fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing continuously. Add vanilla extract and milk as needed to achieve a smooth, pipeable consistency.
- Color the Frosting: Divide the frosting into separate bowls and tint each portion with your chosen gel food coloring (orange, green, purple, or black) to create vibrant Halloween-themed colors.
- Assemble the Whoopie Pies: Pipe or spread a generous amount of colored frosting onto one cake round, then sandwich with another round to form a whoopie pie.
- Decorate: Roll the edges of the pies in Halloween sprinkles. Add candy eyes and use colored sugar or edible glitter to create spooky, festive faces and designs on the frosting.
Notes
- Allow cakes to cool fully before frosting to avoid melting the frosting.
- Gel food coloring is preferred as it does not alter frosting consistency like liquid colorings.
- Use silicone baking mats or parchment paper for easy cleanup and to prevent sticking.
- Customize decorations with various Halloween-themed candies and edible decorations for extra fun.
- Store assembled whoopie pies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 4 days.
