Description

Sour Cream and Onion Party Potatoes are a creamy and flavorful side dish featuring tender mashed russet potatoes mixed with sour cream, butter, and savory dry onion soup mix. Topped with shredded cheddar cheese and garnished with fresh green onions, this comforting American classic is perfect for gatherings and family meals.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt for boiling

Mash Mix

  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 packet (1 ounce) dry onion soup mix
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Toppings

  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced for garnish

Instructions

  1. Boil the Potatoes: Place the potato chunks in a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add 1 tablespoon kosher salt and bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook the potatoes until they are fork-tender, about 15 to 20 minutes.
  2. Drain and Mash: Once the potatoes are cooked, drain them well and return them to the pot. Add the unsalted butter and mash the potatoes until mostly smooth.
  3. Mix in Flavors: Stir in the sour cream, whole milk, dry onion soup mix, garlic powder, and black pepper until the mixture is creamy and well combined.
  4. Prepare to Serve: Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving dish and sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
  5. Garnish and Serve: Garnish with the thinly sliced green onions and serve the potatoes warm for the best flavor.

Notes

  • You can make this dish ahead of time and reheat it in the oven before serving.
  • For extra flavor, fold in crispy bacon bits or caramelized onions.
