Description

A flavorful and easy Onion Beef Fried Rice recipe featuring tender thinly sliced beef, caramelized onions, and perfectly cooked day-old rice, all stir-fried with savory sauces and aromatic sesame oil. A quick and satisfying main course perfect for weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked white rice (preferably cold, day-old)
  • 1/2 lb thinly sliced beef (such as flank steak)
  • 1 medium yellow onion (thinly sliced)
  • 2 green onions (chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 eggs (lightly beaten)

Sauces & Oils

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

Seasonings

  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook the beef: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add thinly sliced beef and cook for 2–3 minutes until browned and just cooked through. Remove beef from the pan and set aside.
  2. Sauté the onions: In the same pan, add the thinly sliced yellow onion and cook for 4–5 minutes until softened and slightly caramelized.
  3. Add garlic: Stir in minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant, careful not to burn it.
  4. Scramble the eggs: Push the onions to one side of the pan, pour in the beaten eggs and scramble until just set.
  5. Add rice and combine: Add the cold, day-old rice to the pan. Break up any clumps with a spatula and stir everything together.
  6. Add beef and seasonings: Return the cooked beef to the pan. Stir in soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and ground black pepper. Stir-fry for another 2–3 minutes, ensuring everything is heated through and well combined.
  7. Adjust seasoning and garnish: Taste and add salt if needed. Garnish with chopped green onions and serve hot.

Notes

  • Day-old rice works best for fried rice because it’s less sticky and fries better.
  • Add frozen peas or diced carrots for extra vegetables and color.
  • Thinly sliced beef cooks quickly and stays tender; avoid overcooking to keep it juicy.
