Ingredients
Scale
Butter and Sugar Base
- 1½ cups unsalted butter, room temperature
- 2 cups powdered sugar
Wet Ingredients
- 2 eggs
- 2 tbsp milk
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp almond extract
Dry Ingredients
- 3½ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ tsp salt
Coloring and Decoration
- Purple gel food coloring
- Black gel food coloring
- Purple sprinkles
- ½ cup black or chocolate sprinkles
Instructions
- Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, use a mixer to cream the room temperature butter and powdered sugar together until the mixture becomes light and fluffy, ensuring the sugar is well incorporated for a smooth base.
- Add Wet Ingredients: Beat in the eggs and milk into the creamed butter mixture until fully smooth and combined, which helps create a moist dough.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the all-purpose flour and salt into the mixture along with vanilla and almond extracts, stirring continuously until a soft dough forms without any dry patches.
- Divide and Color Dough: Separate the dough into three equal portions. Tint one portion purple using the purple gel food coloring, leave one portion white, and color the last portion black with black gel food coloring to create the distinct layers for the spiral effect.
- Roll and Layer Dough: Roll out each colored dough portion into equal-sized rectangles. Layer them carefully starting with the black dough on the bottom, then the white dough in the middle, and finally the purple dough on top. Sprinkle purple sprinkles over the purple dough layer and half cup of black or chocolate sprinkles as desired for added texture and visual appeal.
- Form the Log: Starting from one edge, roll the layered dough rectangles tightly into a log shape, ensuring the layers stay intact to create the spiral pattern when sliced.
- Slice and Bake: Cut the log into round slices approximately ¼ inch thick. Arrange the slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden, then cool completely before serving.
Notes
- Ensure the butter is at room temperature for easier creaming and better texture in the cookies.
- Gel food coloring is preferred over liquid to avoid altering the dough’s consistency.
- Chilling the dough logs before slicing can help achieve cleaner cuts and more defined spirals.
- Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
