Ingredients
Scale
Ingredients
- 1 lb. dried black beans
- 4 cups water
- 2 cups chicken broth (or vegetable broth, reduced sodium)
- 2 tsp. salt
Instructions
- Sort and Rinse Beans: Sort through the dried black beans to remove any debris such as rocks or twigs. Then rinse them thoroughly using a fine mesh strainer or colander under cool running water to clean.
- Add Ingredients to Instant Pot: Place the rinsed black beans, water, chicken or vegetable broth, and salt into a 6-quart Instant Pot. Make sure the pressure release valve is in the sealed position.
- Pressure Cook: Select the manual function on the Instant Pot, set it to high pressure, and set the timer for 30 minutes. It will take approximately 10 minutes for the Instant Pot to reach full pressure before the countdown begins.
- Natural Pressure Release: When cooking time finishes, allow the Instant Pot to naturally release pressure for 20 minutes. Afterward, carefully open the pressure valve to release any remaining pressure and then open the lid.
- Serve or Use: Serve the beans as a side dish directly with some of the cooking liquid, or remove them using a slotted spoon to incorporate into your favorite recipes. Enjoy the tender, flavorful black beans!
Notes
- For a vegetarian version, substitute chicken broth with vegetable broth.
- Soaking beans is not required but can reduce cooking time if preferred.
- Use reduced sodium broth to control salt levels.
- Beans can be stored in their cooking liquid in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or frozen for longer storage.
- Adjust salt to taste after cooking if desired.
- Natural pressure release ensures beans remain tender and prevents splitting.
