Ingredients
Scale
Cheese and Onion Mixture
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 1 cup cheddar cheese, grated
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese, grated
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 2-3 tbsp milk or cream
- Optional: 1/2 cup mashed potatoes (for extra creaminess)
For Coating
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 3/4 cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular)
- 1/4 tsp paprika
- Salt and additional black pepper to taste
For Cooking
- Vegetable oil (for frying) or cooking spray (for baking)
Instructions
- Sauté Onions: Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat, then add the finely chopped onions. Cook, stirring often, until the onions are soft and translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Mix Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the sautéed onions, grated cheddar and mozzarella cheeses, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, black pepper, and milk or cream. Mix well until all ingredients are incorporated.
- Add Mashed Potatoes (Optional): For an extra creamy texture, gently fold in the mashed potatoes into the cheese mixture until evenly combined.
- Shape Patties: Form the mixture into small patties, roughly about 2.5 to 3 inches in diameter. Place the patties on a tray and refrigerate them for 15 to 20 minutes to help them firm up.
- Coat Patties: Prepare three separate shallow dishes with flour, beaten egg, and breadcrumbs mixed with paprika, salt, and black pepper. First, coat each patty lightly in flour, then dip into the beaten egg, and finally, press into the breadcrumb mixture to coat thoroughly.
- Cook Patties: Choose to either fry or bake. For frying, heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat and cook patties for 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crisp. For baking, preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C), place patties on a baking sheet lined with parchment or sprayed with cooking spray, and bake for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through until golden and crisp.
- Serve: Remove from heat and drain briefly on paper towels if fried. Serve warm as a tasty snack, appetizer, or side dish.
Notes
- Mashed potatoes are optional but recommended for a creamier texture inside the patties.
- Use panko breadcrumbs for extra crunchiness.
- Can be baked for a healthier option or fried for classic crispiness.
- Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper according to taste.
- These patties can be made ahead and refrigerated before cooking.
