Ingredients
Scale
For the dough:
- 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 large egg
For the blueberry filling:
- 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the cream cheese glaze:
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. In a small saucepan, heat milk, butter, and water until warm (about 110°F). Add this warm mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth. Beat in the egg, then gradually add the remaining flour until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Make the blueberry filling: While the dough rises, in a saucepan over medium heat, combine blueberries, sugar, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Stir and cook until the mixture thickens, about 5–7 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Allow the filling to cool completely.
- Shape the rolls: Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a 10×15-inch rectangle. Spread the cooled blueberry filling evenly over the dough surface. Starting from the long edge, roll up the dough tightly into a log. Slice the log into 12 equal rolls. Place the rolls into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, cover, and allow to rise again for 30–45 minutes.
- Bake the rolls: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 25–30 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top and cooked through.
- Prepare and add the glaze: While the rolls bake, beat together softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy. Once the rolls are warm from the oven, drizzle the cream cheese glaze over them. Serve immediately for the best taste and texture.
Notes
- For overnight preparation, refrigerate the rolls after the second rise and bake them fresh in the morning for a convenient and delicious start to your day.
- Add lemon zest to the cream cheese glaze for an extra hint of brightness and citrus flavor.
