Description

This Heartwarming Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a comforting and hearty dish featuring seasoned ground beef patties seared to perfection and baked in a rich, creamy onion and garlic gravy. Perfect for family dinners, it pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes or roasted vegetables, delivering a flavorful, satisfying meal inspired by traditional Amish cooking.

Ingredients

Scale

Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Gravy

  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Make the Hamburger Steaks: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly with your hands or a spoon until all ingredients are well incorporated. Shape the mixture into about 4 uniform patties and set aside.
  2. Sear Patties: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the hamburger patties and cook for 2-3 minutes per side until they develop a nice brown crust. Do not cook through. Once browned, transfer the patties to a baking dish lined evenly.
  3. Make the Gravy: In the same skillet used for the patties, add butter. When melted, add chopped onions and minced garlic, sautéing until the onions are soft and translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Sprinkle in the flour and stir continuously to form a roux, cooking for about 1-2 minutes without browning. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and then the heavy cream, continuing to stir until the gravy thickens and is smooth, about 5 minutes.
  4. Bake: Pour the creamy onion gravy over the seared hamburger steaks in the baking dish. Cover the dish with aluminum foil to retain moisture. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 25-30 minutes until the steaks are cooked through and the flavors meld.
  5. Serve & Enjoy: Remove from oven and let the hamburger steak bake rest for 5 minutes. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley. Serve hot alongside creamy mashed potatoes or your favorite roasted vegetables for a complete comforting meal.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • Adjust seasoning according to taste before forming the patties.
  • Use fresh breadcrumbs for a softer texture or panko for a crunchier bite.
  • For a thicker gravy, cook it a bit longer until desired consistency is reached.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop or microwave.
