Ingredients
Scale
Sausages and Rolls
- 4 Italian sausages (mild or spicy)
- 4 hoagie or sandwich rolls
Vegetables and Seasonings
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 1 yellow bell pepper, sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 large yellow onion, sliced
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Optional Toppings
- Mustard
- Provolone cheese
- Hot giardiniera
Instructions
- Preheat and Grill Sausages: Preheat your grill to medium heat. Place the Italian sausages on the grill and cook them for 12 to 15 minutes, turning occasionally to ensure even browning and cooking. They should reach an internal temperature of 160°F to be fully cooked.
- Sauté Peppers and Onions: While the sausages are grilling, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced red, yellow, and green bell peppers along with the sliced yellow onion. Season the vegetables with dried oregano, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Sauté the mixture for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the peppers and onions have softened and developed a slight caramelization.
- Toast Rolls: During the last few minutes of sausage grilling, place the hoagie or sandwich rolls on the grill to toast lightly. This adds a nice crunch and helps hold the sandwich ingredients together.
- Assemble Sandwiches: To assemble, place a grilled sausage inside each toasted roll. Generously top the sausage with the sautéed peppers and onions mixture. If desired, add optional toppings such as mustard, slices of provolone cheese, or hot giardiniera for extra flavor and heat.
- Serve Hot: Serve the sandwiches while hot for the best taste. Enjoy this classic and satisfying grilled sausage sandwich meal!
Notes
- For a melty, cheesy twist, place slices of provolone or mozzarella cheese over the sausages during the last few minutes on the grill so it melts nicely.
- For enhanced flavor, deglaze the sauté pan with a splash of balsamic vinegar or white wine after cooking the vegetables, scraping up any browned bits before topping your sandwiches.
