Ingredients
Scale
Cookie Dough
- 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
Icing
- 2 cups icing sugar
- Milk or water as needed for icing consistency
- Food coloring (various colors)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the cookies.
- Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and granulated sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes, to create a smooth base for the dough.
- Add Eggs and Vanilla: Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then incorporate the vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and uniform.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour and baking powder, then gradually add this to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined without overmixing.
- Color the Dough: Divide the dough into portions according to how many colors you want. Add food coloring to each portion and knead gently until color is evenly distributed.
- Roll and Cut: On a floured surface, roll out each colored dough portion to about ¼ inch thickness. Use egg-shaped cookie cutters to cut out the cookies.
- Arrange and Bake: Place the cut-out cookies on parchment-lined baking sheets, ensuring they are spaced evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes or until the edges turn a light golden brown.
- Cool and Decorate: Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack before decorating with colored icing made by mixing icing sugar with milk or water and food coloring.
Notes
- Make sure butter is softened to room temperature for easier creaming.
- Do not overbake the cookies to keep them soft and chewy inside.
- If dough is too sticky, chill it for 30 minutes before rolling.
- Use gel food coloring for more vivid colors without altering the dough consistency.
- Decorate cooled cookies with icing using piping bags or a small spoon for neat designs.
