Description

This Balsamic Glazed Caprese Panini Supreme recipe offers a delicious twist on the classic Caprese salad by layering fresh mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, and basil leaves inside perfectly grilled sourdough or ciabatta bread. Enhanced with a sweet balsamic glaze and optional pesto, this vegetarian panini boasts a golden, buttery crust and melted cheese, making it a perfect quick meal or lunch option.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread and Spread

  • 4 slices sourdough or ciabatta bread
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon pesto (optional)

Filling

  • 8 oz fresh mozzarella, sliced
  • 2 medium tomatoes, sliced
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic glaze
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat Equipment: Preheat a panini press or skillet over medium heat to prepare for grilling the panini. This ensures even cooking and a crisp crust.
  2. Prepare Bread Slices: Brush one side of each bread slice evenly with olive oil. This oil-coated side will be the outer side of the sandwich to help it crisp and brown beautifully.
  3. Assemble Sandwiches: On the un-oiled side of two bread slices, layer the sliced fresh mozzarella, followed by tomato slices and fresh basil leaves. Drizzle with balsamic glaze, then season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Optionally, spread a thin layer of pesto to add depth of flavor.
  4. Top and Butter: Complete each sandwich by placing the remaining slices of bread on top, oil side out. Spread softened butter generously on the outsides of each sandwich to achieve a golden, flavorful crust when cooked.
  5. Cook Panini: Place the sandwiches into the preheated panini press and cook for 3–5 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and the mozzarella is fully melted. If using a skillet, place sandwiches in the pan, press down with a heavy pan or spatula, and cook until golden; then flip and cook the other side similarly.
  6. Serve: Remove the panini from the press or skillet, slice in half if desired, and serve warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • You can substitute balsamic glaze with a homemade balsamic reduction if preferred for a more intense flavor.
  • For an added layer of richness and protein, include a slice of prosciutto before grilling.
  • Gluten-free bread can be used as an alternative for those with gluten intolerance.
  • The optional pesto adds extra herbaceous flavor but can be omitted for a simpler version.
