Description

Albanian Baked Feta is a simple and flavorful appetizer featuring a block of feta cheese baked with fresh tomatoes, green peppers, and aromatic herbs. This dish offers a warm, slightly tangy, and spicy treat perfect for serving as part of a mezze platter or enjoying with crusty bread.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 8 oz block of feta cheese
  • 1 medium tomato, diced
  • 1 small green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 small red chili or hot pepper, finely chopped (optional)

Seasonings and Garnish

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) to ensure it reaches the perfect temperature for baking the feta.
  2. Arrange the feta: Place the 8 oz block of feta cheese in the center of a small oven-safe baking dish or ramekin.
  3. Add toppings: Top the feta with the diced tomato, sliced green bell pepper, and if using, finely chopped red chili for some heat.
  4. Season and oil: Drizzle olive oil evenly over the feta and toppings. Sprinkle with dried oregano, crushed red pepper flakes if desired, and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
  5. Bake the feta: Place the dish uncovered in the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the feta softens and develops a lightly golden crust.
  6. Cool and garnish: Remove the baked feta from the oven and allow it to cool slightly. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley before serving.
  7. Serve and enjoy: Serve warm with crusty bread or as part of a mezze platter to enjoy the rich, melty cheese and vibrant vegetable flavors.

Notes

  • For a milder dish, omit the red chili and crushed red pepper flakes.
  • Optional additions like olives or a drizzle of honey can add an interesting flavor twist.
  • This appetizer is versatile and can also be served as a side dish or part of a light meal.
